Shu Kutha Bolaycha Nahi Marathi Natak. That phrase used to be a big joke in the city of Lucknow, India. But today, it’s a reality for an increasing number of students. Why? It's hard to say –many factors – but one thing is certain: the demand for proficiency in Hindi as a second language is growing exponentially among those that don't have it as their first language.
Bolaycha Nahi Marathi Natak is a play in Marathi written by Sudhir Joshi. The comedy is about an unemployed, alcoholic car driver, who has to deal with his very language-proud brother-in-law. It is based on Sudhir’s personal experiences of living in an Uttar Pradesh village, far away from Mumbai.
The play revolves around the character of Madhavrao Kulkarni who has come home to his sister's house due to unemployment. His brother-in-law is a Hindi-speaking Uttar Pradeshi Brahmin who believes that Madhavrao's Marathi accent reflects the fact that he hasn't studied well. The play also touches on the problems faced by Marathi speakers in the state of Maharashtra.
After the play was performed in Sitabaldi Theater, it was picked up for distribution in India and abroad. Sudhir Joshi finalized the arrangements with Prasad Satlavkar, director of National School of Drama, New Delhi. The play was given to NSD's actor's troupe for its performance at NSD's annual festival in 1998. Since then it has become a hit. Sudhir Joshi also asked the actors to stay in touch with him regarding their experience of performing the play. He visited them at NSD and suggested changes in the script, if necessary.
Bolaycha Nahi Marathi Natak was selected for a workshop at Rangashankara repertory under the guidance of Girish Karnad and other noted theater personalities like Satya Dev Tripathi, Veena Deshpande etc. The play was further revised and then performed at Rangashankara Repertory March 26 & 27, 2004.
The play has been translated into Hindi by Sudhir Joshi himself and was published by Sahitya Akademi. It was also translated into English by Sudhir Joshi. The English translation has been published by the University of Calicut, Kerala, India.
The play was performed in Hindi at Prithvi Theater, New Delhi on July 22nd and 23rd 2006 under the direction of Mr. Satya Dev Tripathi for NSD alumni. It was also performed at Ravindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai during December 2006.
